Q: Did Singer invent the sewing machine?

Q: Did Singer invent the sewing machine?A: No… and yes. What we think of as our basic sewing machines today are actually a compilation of the ideas and inventions of many different people. Singer did greatly contribute to the sewing machine, but he certainly did not produce the first one. Thomas Saint can be credited with the first working and patented sewing machine in 1790. Weisenthal, who came before Saint, actually came up with the idea for the first sewing machine needle, but he never made a working and complete machine. After Saint, the sewing machine continued to be improved upon.
